Facilities are available in all Departments for the completion by research of the degree of Master of Philosophy (MPhil). Candidates pursue an approved program of advanced study and research which may include some coursework and research seminar units and participation in presentations.
To be eligible for admission a candidate must normally possess a Bachelor degree with first-class or second-class honours from a recognised university or other tertiary institution or have equivalent qualifications, such as demonstrated research experience or a satisfactorily completed Masters or postgraduate diploma including a research component worth 25% of the program load and directly related to the acquisition of research skills. The Postgraduate Certificate in Research Preparation provides another pathway into the MPhil for students with a Bachelor degree in science or a related discipline.
The minimum period of candidature is one year and the maximum period is two years for full-time candidates and four years for part-time candidates. Extensions may be granted in special circumstances. Part-time candidates must be able to spend on average throughout the year at least 20 hours a week on a program of research and advanced study and attend the University on an average of at least once a week for consultation with their supervisors.
