What is the Science Experience?

The Science Experience is three days of hands-on fun in science at a University for Year 9 and 10 students.

Each program is designed to provide students who have an interest in science with an opportunity to engage in a wide range of fascinating science activities under the guidance of scientists who love their work.

When?

The Science Experience will be held at Macquarie University on Wednesday 19 – Friday 21 January 2011.

You will be given a formal program outlining the day’s activities and descriptions when you arrive on day 1.

  1. How do I get to Macquarie University?
    Whether you're driving, riding, walking or catching public transport, Macquarie University is easily accessible.
     
    Catching a bus or train (or both) from wherever you are in Sydney is easy. To find out which bus service is best for you or to plan your route and timetable, just look up the transport timetable on our general timetables page. Macquarie University also has its own Train Station.

  3. What time do I arrive and leave each day?

    Wednesday 19 January
    Arrive: 9.00am
    Depart: 4.00pm

    Thursday 20 January
    Arrive: 8.50am
    Depart: 3.45pm

    Friday 21 January
    Arrive: 8.55am
    Depart: 4.15pm

    ** The times stated above will be confirmed closer to the program start date. All participants will be sent confirmation details with the final program times.

  4. Is there parking on campus?

    Casual entry permits are available to students, staff and members of the public. These are available from ticket dispensing machines located at the following locations:
    • N3 Carpark (near Culloden Road)
    • W4 Carpark (south of building W6A)
    • X3 Carpark (south of building X5A)
    • X4 Carpark (south of Banksia Cottage)


    W4 Carpark is recommended for parents/ guardians wishing to park their cars.

    Casual parking fees as follows:

    Valid for up to 1 hour, expiring at 8:00pm on day of purchase $6.00
    Valid for up to 3 hours, expiring at 8:00pm on day of purchase $10.00
    Valid for 4 hours or more, expiring at 8:00pm on day of purchase $18.00

    Please remember to display your parking ticket on the dashboard of your vehicle.

  1. What if I arrive late?

    Go to the registration desk in Building E6A and call Caroline Taouk on 0417 213 353. You will then be taken to your designated room.
     
  2. What if I need to leave early?

    A roll is taken each morning and group numbers are counted throughout the day. For your own safety we need to know the whereabouts of all participants. If you need to leave early you will need to give Caroline a signed note from your parent/ guardian advising the time you need to leave and reason that morning at roll call. Participants will not be allowed to leave early without this signed note.
     
  3. What should I bring?
    • Pen
    • Notepad
    • Water
    • Money (for Public Transport, lunch or to make a call)
    • Umbrella (in case of wet weather)
    • Hat
    • Sunscreen (will also be provided in case you forget)
    • You may like to bring a camera (optional)

  1. What should I wear?

    Comfortable clothing such as jeans, t-shirt and comfortable shoes such as sneakers are recommended. All participants must wear closed in shoes on each day. Students wearing thongs or other open shoes will not be permitted into the labs.


  2. Tea breaks and lunch

    Water and fruit will be provided each day for morning and afternoon tea. You are welcome to bring other snacks with you.

    You will need to purchase your own lunch on Wednesday and Thursday. You are welcome to bring your own lunch or buy lunch at the Campus Hub Building Food Court.

    A BBQ lunch will be provided for you on the Friday – vegetarian option will also be available. You are welcome to bring your own lunch if you have special dietary requirements.

    Note: No participant will be allowed off campus during breaks.
     
  3. What if I get lost during my time on campus?

    If you get lost on campus at any time please contact Caroline Taouk on 0417 213 353. You will also be given an emergency contact card on registration with useful details.
