Macquarie University's top science and technology academics

Undergraduate and postgraduate students at Macquarie University learn from the best. Our academics specialise in a broad range of science, engineering and technology areas - from physics and psychology to animal behaviour and astrobiology.

Meet some of Macquarie University's top science and technology academics who are conducting leading research and have won awards for their teaching.

Why we employ big wave surfersDr james cresser

Dr James Cresser's passion has taken him around the world, from Australia and New Zealand to Europe, North America and Israel. You could say he goes where the wave mechanics and open quantum systems are. Right now, that place is Macquarie University, where he is Senior Lecturer in Physics and involved in cutting-edge research of theoretical physics. In fact, breaking new ground is what our academic stars do best.

Why we employ accessories to murder

Dr Marie Herberstein and Associate Professor Ken Cheng have watched countless orb-web spiders use their 'webs of deceit' to lure unsuspecting prey. They've also coolly looked on as the spiders themselves have fallen victim to deadly predators. All in the name of research, of course. These two esteemed academics are combining their expertise in psychology and biological science to collaborate on a leading edge research project. Together, they're pushing the boundaries of both their fields.

Why we employ warriors

It's one thing to research global climate change and threatened species. It's quite another to take this research to governments and influence the key decision-makers. For Associate Professor Lesley Hughes, Senior Lecturer in Biological Sciences, fighting for the environment is all in a day's work.

Why we employ fishmongers

Associate Professor Rob Harcourt knows his fish. And his sharks, dolphins, whales, penguins, seals and many more marine creatures. His work on marine conservation often takes him to where these animals call home - even if that means the chilly waters of Antarctica. As a licensed scuba diving instructor, biologist Associate Professor Harcourt is always pushing the boundaries of marine mammal research into new territory - and taking his students with him.

Why we employ mind readers

We know what you're thinking - and no, we're not exaggerating. Cognitive neuropsychologist Professor Max Coltheart really does read minds. His groundbreaking research delves into delusions and beliefs, and explores the notion that these may not be psychiatric illnesses, but very real conditions that can be treated through psychotherapy. He's a world leader in his field, as are many of the academic stars at Macquarie University.

Why we employ jugglers

Associate Professor Richie Howitt's research involves finding a harmonious balance between many different groups - no easy task, considering that much of his work is concerned with issues of social justice, ecological sustainability, Indigenous self-determination, the impact of mining on Aboriginal interests and urban planning. Juggling many interests, however, hasn't distracted Associate Professor Howitt from his focus on students, and he is widely recognised as one of Macquarie University's most outstanding teachers.
