| Description: | The Bachelor of Arts with Diploma of Education is the main program offered by the Department of Education. From the first year of study towards becoming a secondary school teacher, you will need to undertake academic studies in your subject specialisations (the subjects you plan to teach) and Education studies. For primary teachers you will undertake a major in Education with other units taken from disciplines that are taught in the Primary Curriculum. If you are intending to become a primary school teacher, you also need to take units in areas such as English, Mathematics, Science and Technology, Human Society and its Environment (HSIE), Creative Arts and Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) to meet Key Learning Area (KLA) requirements, as specified by the NSW Institute of Teachers. If you are intending to become a secondary school teacher, you need to undertake studies that provide you with an academic major in your first teaching subject and, where appropriate, an academic major or minor in your second teaching subject. | Key Features: | Macquarie University has made a major contribution to the education of school teachers through its undergraduate and postgraduate teacher education programs. The BA DipEd allows students to take their Education units concurrently with their Arts studies, rather than subsequent to them. In undertaking their professional units in the third and fourth years of their programs they work in cooperation with a "master teacher" in a school over the year. |

Requirements
| Recommended Prior Knowledge: | All intending teachers are required to have Higher School Certificate (HSC) English at Band 4 (or its equivalent). Intending primary teachers must also have HSC Mathematics at Band 4 (or its equivalent). If you don’t reach this standard on entry, you will be required to satisfactorily complete a unit of study with us in the relevant areas, as outlined in the Teacher Education Program (TEP) guide. Assumed knowledge, recommended studies and prerequisites are dependent on the program structure and you should refer to the Macquarie University Handbook of Undergraduate Studies for full requirements ( www.handbook.mq.edu.au ). |

What You Will Study
No matter which discipline area you decide to teach in you will be able to undertake several types of units. You will undertake units that provide an academic background both in studies of education, as a preparation for teaching, and units that address curriculum, pedagogy and professional experience in the teaching methodologies. Education subjects are included throughout each year of the degree program. |
