The Bachelor of Social Science prepares students for a wide variety of research and policy-related careers in both the private and public sectors.

It provides specific skills in social research and applied social science, and offers a wide base for an understanding of issues in the context of a culturally diverse social environment with an increasing emphasis on international and global connections.

The focus of the degree is vocational and we aim to instil in our graduates the confidence and capability to excel in any challenging employment environment.

The opportunity for internships with well known organisations in the government, private and non-profit sectors will be offered within the degree program.

Career opportunities for graduates can include international aid work, social research, market research, policy analysis, journalism and the media, education, tourism, program management and evaluation, social planning, resource management in social contexts, and intercultural communication.

Areas of work can also include government and non-government organisations, corporate business, and consultancy firms.

Requirements

Recommended Prior Knowledge:

First-year social science units do not require any assumed knowledge, prerequisites or recommended studies. Other units taken as part of a degree may require assumed knowledge, prerequisites or recommended studies and you should refer to the Macquarie University Handbook of Undergraduate Studies for full degree requirements ( www.handbook.mq.edu.au ).

  • IELTS (Academic english only): Minimum 6.5 overall, with 6.0 in each section

  • TOEFL (Computer based test): Minimum 237 overall, with 19 Listening, 19 Reading, 25 Structure/Writing
  • TOEFL (Internet based test): Minimum 92 overall, with 18 Listening, 17 Reading, 22 Writing, 22 Speaking
